Circle Pacific 1998/99 - Day 5 - California

  • Fresh start!
  • Goals for day: find real Chinatown and visit Pier 39
  • Walked our asses off!
  • Bagel breakfast
  • Real Chinatown around Stockton - no white tourists - no English labels/signs/etc - saw lots of new vegetables
  • Pier 39 - 2 guys + 2 girls w/ sign "Your picture with a freak, $1.00" - sweet - watched video about Alcatraz - then...sourdough
  • Around 1850 Isadore Boudin started baking sourdough in San Francisco - Boudin's still uses the original starter - a revelation: no one should be 28 before they've tasted real sourdough - full, tangy flavor + chewy crumb + crunchy-chewy-bubbly crust - had lunch there (clam chowder in bread bowl, of course)
  • More walking
  • Back thru Chinatown for snack (You's Dim Sum off Stockton) + hibiscus tea - mmm...
  • More burritos for dinner @ Taqueria Can-Cun
  • Checked into hotel on Hwy 280 south of SF - great baths - great night's sleep
